Rationale: The Board recognizes that each student’s mode of dress and grooming is a manifestation of personal style and individual preference. The Board will not interfere with the right of students and their parents to make decisions regarding their appearance except when their choices affect the educational program of the schools or the health and safety of others.
The Board authorizes the Superintendent’s designee to enforce school regulations prohibiting student dress or grooming practices which:
1. Present a hazard to the health or safety of the student him/herself or to others in the school.
2. Materially interfere with schoolwork create disorder or disrupt the educational program.
3. Cause excessive wear or damage to school property.
4. Prevent the student from achieving his/her own educational objectives because of blocked vision or restricted movement.
Additionally, Students may be required to wear certain types of clothing while participating in physical education classes, labs, extracurricular activities, or other situations when special attire may be required to insure the health or safety of the student. In an effort to maintain an educationally sound, undisrupted environment, the following dress guidelines will be enforced in accordance with Board Policy 221.
Students may wear clothing in which the bottom of the shirt meets the top of the
short/skirt/pant and covers all undergarments. Sleeveless shirts must cover the width of 1- inch minimum.
Administration reserves the right to deem a sleeveless shirt inappropriate. The following garments are not permitted during the school day:
• Hats, sweatbands, stocking caps, sun visors, sunglasses,
• Hoods of sweatshirts are to be down
• Fishnet/see through shirts
• Clothing with obscene/offensive language
• Clothing advertising/displaying any alcoholic, drug, or tobacco related items
• Undergarments (undershirts, thermals, boxer shorts, etc.); pajamas and other night
coverings in place of regular clothing or undergarments worn as outer garments.
Students in violation of these guidelines will be given the opportunity to wear something appropriate. If a student refuses to wear what is provided, the parent will be asked to bring in clothing that is in compliance with the dress code. Violators will be given a warning on the first offense and progressive consequences for subsequent offenses as warranted by the middle school’s Code of Conduct.
