6th Grade Welcome Letter

Hello 6th Graders,
Welcome to middle school! We are so excited for you to join us here at PAMS! This year is going to be filled with both learning and fun. You’ll meet new friends, take on challenges, and work toward your goals. As your teachers, we look forward to helping you every step of the way.
This welcome packet contains important information about 6th grade. On the following pages, you’ll find the 6th grade supply list and a field trip permission slip. Please read each page carefully with an adult at home.
As you prepare for the new school year, we would like you to gather the supplies listed on the next page. For each class, you will need a color-coded notebook and folder. You will use a draw-string backpack to carry your computer, charger, pencil case, and earbuds from class to class. You will not be allowed to carry a regular backpack during the school day. We’ll help you use your locker to organize your supplies so you feel prepared and confident throughout the day! Please read the supply list carefully and bring your supplies with you on the first day of school.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to seeing you soon! It’s going to be a great year!
Sincerely,
Your 6th Grade Teachers

8th Grade Information:

Dear Students, Parents, and/or Guardians,

We hope that you had an enjoyable summer vacation, and that you are eager to start another great year, either as an 8th grader or as the parent/guardian of an 8th grade student.  The 8th grade team has numerous academic and social activities planned for the upcoming school year, which should provide a highly interactive and educational environment.  As you prepare to start your 8th grade “career”, we would like to point out a few important tips to ensure success in your final year of middle school.  Addressing these topics at the start of school will help all of us have a more successful and productive 2022-2023 school year.

Homework / In-Class Assignments:
We find that some students are failing to meet due dates and often the assignments are incomplete or of poor quality.  Late assignments will be graded according to a standardized policy.  We suggest that you check with your child for quality and completion of these assignments.  We encourage you and your child to routinely monitor their progress on Skyward / Canvas, the district’s electronic grade book.

Absences/Make-Up Work:
Please remember to remind your child in case of absence that it is their responsibility to see the teacher as according to school code and to make up all work in the time allotted, again as per school code. Please remind your child that all work can be found on Canvas, and there is still an expectation that work should be completed, even if a student is not in class for any reason.

Preparation for class:
Please stress the importance of purchasing and bringing essential school supplies, such as; books, pens, pencils, highlighters, markers or colored pencils, cap erasers, lined paper, and a one subject notebook for Language Arts.  Having the appropriate materials on a daily basis will ensure that your child will not miss valuable concepts taught in class because he/she is unprepared.  Please check your child’s notebook for organization, completed assignments, school related material that may need to be returned, and required class materials each day.
o If your child wears glasses or contacts, please make sure that they wear them in order to get the most out of their classes.

Math / Calculator
The Math Department would strongly encourage each student to have their own scientific calculator as they return to PAMS.  It is important that students have their own calculator and bring it to class every day to become familiar with how it works. This piece of technology will be used throughout their time at PAMS and will be sufficient for all math classes and state assessments taken here at the middle school. If you are debating about what type of calculator to purchase, we recommend either the TI-30XIIS or the TI-30XS Multi-view calculator. Both calculators will perform necessary functions and are similar in cost (each under $20 from many retail stores and websites).  Once your student has their calculator, please have your student write his or her name on the back of the calculator in permanent marker so we can return it if it is lost.

Backpacks in School
Regular backpacks will be permitted to transport belongings to and from school but will not be permitted to carry from class to class.  They must stay in the student’s locker and remain there all day.  Students will be permitted to carry a draw-string bag, provided by PAMS, to transport computers, chargers, pencil cases, and earbuds from class to class. We will reintroduce the students to lockers so they can organize their belongings and plan the day.

We are looking forward to working, both academically and socially, with you in order to make this upcoming school year as successful as possible.  Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at the middle school (484) 927-5200.

Sincerely,
The 8th Grade
