Joan Bauer visits PAMS

On March 19th Phoenixville Area Middle School had the good fortune to be visited by the bestselling author, Joan Bauer. Starting back in 1992 with her first book Squashed, Mrs. Bauer has published 13 gripping realistic fiction books for young adult readers. Along the way she won many awards for her books, including a Newbery honor for Hope Was Here. Although the young people in Joan Bauer’s books all face challenging and difficult real-life situations, in the midst of all the turmoil there is always hope and humor.

During Joan Bauer’s visit, she presented three, engaging presentations, one to each grade level. In each presentation, she shared her path to becoming a writer, talked about some of her books and some of the characters in her books, and read some selected passages from her books. Mrs. Bauer also led the entire audience through a 5-minute activity where the group collectively developed a potential character for a book.

Mrs. Bauer was both inspirational and motivational.  She spent the majority of her presentation time walking around the entire auditorium, and connecting directly with as many students as possible. She continued connecting with students and teachers through a lunch with 13 students who had created posters about her books, through book signing, and through interviews by both Phantom TV crew and also PAMS Press star reporters. Watch for the interview on Phantom TV. Stay tuned!

The author visit was a joint effort between the PAMS Home and School Association and the PAMS Library.
