Literacy Resources

The following are literacy resources for parents, teachers and students to use.  They act as a support during this time of virtual learning.
5 Ways to support Writers at Home

1. Provide the time and space for writing
Writers need a comfy, quiet place to do their best thinking and writing. They also need uninterrupted time to brainstorm and draft without distraction. When you allow children to work independently, you communicate the message that you are confident in their abilities to be writers and to solve any blocks they run into independently.

2. Provide tools
Writing might occur in writing notebooks or perhaps on a Word document or digital notebook. Help writers by making sure they have the right tools for the job. Do they need some fun, colorful pens, or maybe a new notebook? Or maybe they just help navigating the digital notebook?

3. Ask students to rehearse before writing
From Kindergarten to eighth grade, writers can talk through their stories and ideas more easily than they can write them. If your child is stuck, ask them to tell you about what they plan to write. Be their biggest cheerleader afterwards.

4. Respect the writing process
Students will move through the writing process; generating ideas, sketching, labeling, drafting, revising, drafting again, starting over with a new idea, drafting again, revising and editing. Writing can be messy. The writing process isn't about writing perfectly. We want students to feel free to take risks, try new techniques and marvel in their work. Don't feel like you have to "correct" their work during this time. Allow young writers to develop their own identities as writers and learn from their mistakes.

5. Offer positive feedback and a supportive audience
Be enthusiastic about what your child writes. Be specific with your feedback. For example, instead of just saying " great job," you could say "When I read this first line, I couldn't wait to read more!" or "The detail about the dog's breath and soft fur made me feel like I was in the story." Help your child find others to read their writing to as well; perhaps a family member or neighbor.
