“Good morning Phoenixville! You’re tuned to WPHX the best and only radio station at the Phoenixville Area Middle School. Now will you please rise and recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remain standing for a moment of silence.”
This is how the first moments of school are started every day for close to 900 students/staff each and every morning, delivered by groups of 4-6 dedicated students who rotate each marking period.
WPHX has been in existence for over 10 years and has been self-supporting since day one. The students generate their own revenue that supports the purchase of all WPHX broadcasting equipment. From the early days when the students had to announce from a phone handset in the main office of the old building, to today’s wireless microphones and streaming music, the students are exposed to, and learn how to manipulate, the latest technology to keep the broadcasts sounding the best they can.
A minimum of 20 students participate each and every year which means in the past ten years we have provided over 200 students with the opportunity to explore a medium that may lead to a career later in life. Many of our WPHX graduates go on to work/volunteer at Phantom TV at the High School.
The students are responsible for choosing appropriate music and jokes that will appeal to their large audience without being offensive. They also arrive to school early to review the announcements and check for proper pronunciations.
In previous years we’ve streamlined how the staff submits their announcements, going from paper to incorporating an email delivery system through the district’s Microsoft Outlook account. This not only ensures a quick delivery of daily announcements, but also makes posting announcements to the district website on a daily basis much faster and less labor intensive for the office staff.
This year we will be working on a video production that can summarize events going on in and around the middle school with the intent of broadcasting a taped presentation every few weeks.
WPHX does more than just provide daily announcements to staff and students, it is a student run organization that entertains and informs a large and diverse audience starting at 7:40 every school morning.
